Another First Letter to a Political Figure
Mr. Gore,
I can’t believe that I’m doing this. Although I have been a follower of American politics for most of my life, I have never done something like write a letter to a political figure before. However, I truly believe that there is a real potential for change in this country right now, and that it’s time to stand up and be heard, or else suffer the consequences that come from complacency. I believe this so strongly that I am stepping out of my comfort zone to ask you to officially endorse Mr. Barack Obama in his bid for the Presidency.
With the movie “An Inconvenient Truth,” you brought the climate crisis to the front of the American consciousness. Your words were able to change the face of our nation, and make people start to have a green mindset. Well, another inconvenient truth in America today is that there is a desperate need for change at the highest level of government. A lot of citizens have given up on our leaders, and have embraced a very cynical view of the political system. I confess that, before witnessing the Obama campaign, I was one of these citizens. As trite as it might sound, however, Barack Obama has reinvigorated my love of politics, and destroyed my cynicism. I believe not only in his politics, but in his character. I believe in Barack Obama, and I believe that you do, too.
I understand that you may have some concerns about endorsing a candidate that may not win the party’s nomination. You may step on some toes in doing so, and you may fear that it will hurt your ability to advance climate issues with the next President, should it not be Mr. Obama. However, you did not let fears about stepping on toes stop you from putting out “An Inconvenient Truth,” although there were many people who were opposed to it. Your country needs you right now, Mr. Gore. People here respect you, and your opinion. You can use that respect to help Barack Obama become the next President of the United States of America. You can help make Americans believe in not only climate change, but in political change as well. I beg you: step out of your comfort zone and endorse Barack Obama in his bid for the Presidency.
