Do It for the Party
Vice President Gore –
I am a lifelong supporter of the Democratic Party, eagerly awaiting the chance to cast my first presidential vote this fall for a candidate who I truly believe in to lead our country. I am deeply disappointed, however, that if forced to make the unfortunate choice between the two, I would feel obligated to cast this vote for John McCain over Hillary Clinton, in order to send the clear message to Washington that decency and integrity are two qualities that must immediately return to the American political discourse at any cost. And a staggering number of equally staunch Democrats with whom I have spoken feel exactly the same way.
At the same time, I have been heartened to learn in the past several weeks that many of my Republican acquaintances are confident that were Barack Obama to win the Democratic nomination, he would be their first choice over any of their party’s candidates come November.
I understand sincerely that you have found in climate change advocacy a calling that transcends politics, and that you may be hesitant to return to that muddy stage for fear of tarnishing this all-important undertaking. But I strongly believe that in Obama, the United States has a unique opportunity to choose a decisively inclusive and unifying leader, one who also transcends the ugly politics that most would still have us accept as the only way, at just the time when that is what our nation most urgently requires.
He needs your public approval and assistance in this regard, however, starting today, and not in August, when the opportunity in front of us may have already been lost to the flawed system he so passionately endeavors to correct.
Thank you for your attention, and I hope this letter finds you well.
